Rediscovering what energizes us through moments of awe and connection
I’ve just returned from a four-day business trip for my museum role — and what I witnessed in a remote nature reserve reminded me why passion transforms professional life.
A Moment of Stillness
I traveled with a group of historians, anthropologists, and folklore experts, ranging in age from 35 to 85. We were surrounded by sweeping mountains and untouched landscapes. The air was calm. The scenery breathtaking.
A quiet stillness seemed to embrace everything around us. And in that serene setting, something remarkable unfolded: their passion for their work became almost tangible. It filled the space like sunlight streaming through the trees — warm, steady, and illuminating.
In a field where financial gain is often scarce, their dedication and fascination stood out. They weren’t just doing a job; they were living their calling.
Witnessing Passion Up Close
Being surrounded by people so deeply engaged in their work made me reflect on my own path — especially on the moments when my passion had dimmed and I needed to rediscover what truly drives me.
These scholars were entangled with their work in the best possible way: driven, curious, animated by discovery. Watching them reminded me how differently we experience our professional lives when passion is at the core.
Many of us build our careers around stability, recognition, or practicality. These are valid and important motivations. But amid the demands of daily life, we often forget to ask a simple but transformative question:
What truly fascinates me?
Reconnecting with What Energizes Us
The path back to passion doesn’t always require grand gestures. Even small steps toward curiosity, joy, or genuine interest can shift how we show up at work. It might be revisiting a forgotten interest, allowing space for new questions, or simply paying attention to the moments that make us feel most alive.
It’s not always obvious, and it’s rarely linear — but every moment we reconnect with what energizes us matters. Passion doesn’t have to be loud; sometimes, it’s a quiet, steady flame that reminds us why we began in the first place.
An Invitation to Reflect
Have you ever experienced a moment when you felt completely alive in your work? What made it different?
I’d love to hear your reflections in the comments.
