Don't Come Back from Your Summer Holiday Exactly as You Left

Every summer, something quietly shifts. In just a few days, we begin to reconnect with parts of ourselves that seem to disappear during the rest of the year. Not because a holiday changes who we are. But because, for a little while, the noise fades.
The pace slows down. The endless to-do lists become shorter. We stop trying to keep up with every role we've taken on. And in that quieter space, something important begins to emerge. Maybe it was that evening walk that reminded you how long it had been since you walked with nowhere in particular to go. Or the calm you felt while reading a book, enjoying your coffee without checking your phone, or simply allowing yourself to do... nothing.
It's not that we become someone different during the holidays. It's that we reconnect with someone who was already there, hidden beneath responsibilities, deadlines and the constant pace of everyday life.
And little by little, we start noticing things.
What genuinely gives us energy.
What we didn't miss at all.
When we felt the lightest.
When we smiled for no particular reason.
Which thoughts kept returning.
Most of us, however, let that opportunity slip away.
September arrives. We open our calendars. The days quickly fill up again, and within a few weeks we find ourselves living exactly as we did before. As if the holidays were nothing more than a pleasant interruption. And perhaps that's the greatest gift of summer that we so often leave behind. Because a holiday isn't simply a break from life.
It's an opportunity to see it more clearly.
This is exactly what coaching invites us to do.
Not to become a better version of ourselves. But to pause, observe with greater clarity who we are, what gives us life, and what slowly pulls us away from it. And then, to intentionally shape our everyday lives so those insights don't disappear the moment we return to our routines. Because real change doesn't happen during the holidays.
It happens when we decide that what we've learned about ourselves deserves a place in the life we return to.
So before you fill your calendar this September, take a few quiet minutes to ask yourself:
What do I want to keep from this summer?
What did I discover about myself?
What do I want to protect when I return to work?
Which "yes" deserves a second thought?
Which part of myself do I not want to lose again?
Because the most valuable thing we can bring back from summer isn't a tan or a collection of beautiful photos. It's a clearer picture of who we are when life isn't constantly rushing us.
And perhaps September is the perfect time to make sure that person has a place in our everyday life.
